Ariana Grande Performed An Emotional Ballad From ‘The Last Five Years’ During a Virtual Concert

Ariana Grande is providing a bit of musical therapy, Broadway style. On Monday, she performed in Tony Award-winning composer and lyricist Jason Robert Brown’s virtual SubCulture Artist-in-Residency concert and sang “Still Hurting,” a ballad from Brown’s musical The Last Five Years.

“still hurting 🖤by / performed with the one n only Jason Robert Brown. love u always.
so much support and love to @subculture_nyc and to this stunning band: @digifiddler , @gary_sieger , @mairidp , @jamiedonaldeblen,” Grande captioned her performance on Instagram. The song was most famously performed in the 2015 film adaptation of the 2002 Off-Broadway musical, which starred Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan.

Viewers could stream the musical event for free, which also included a performance from Broadway’s Shoshana Bean. Fans were encouraged to donate to SubCulture staff and musicians whose income has been impacted by the Broadway shutdown over COVID-19. “That was so beautiful @MrJasonRBrown,” Grande wrote on Twitter after the show. “I loved every minute so much ! thank u and @SubCulture_NYC for having me and for doing this. everyone played and sang so beautifully. love u.”

Grande, who performed in Brown’s 2008 musical 13 at the start of her career, also praised Bean’s performance on Twitter. “U both sounded f—ing phenomenal @ShoshanaBean @MrJasonRBrown,” she wrote. “I’m still recovering from everything i just watched. thank u for existing and for being human masterclasses in musicality and technique.”

This isn’t the first virtual event Grande has participated in during the pandemic. Earlier this month, she belted “I Won’t Say I’m in Love” from Hercules for the Disney Family Singalong. In March, she reunited virtually with Victorious cast members Victoria Justice, Elizabeth Gillies, and Avan Jogia for the show’s 10-year anniversary. Her next rumored career move? Joining the cast of American Horror Story season 10.
